Admission and Registration
The University seeks to admit to its tertiary education programmes all students who have an expectation of completing their programme of study successfully, with the proviso that the University has the necessary resources to support the number of students on the programme. The Royal Charter of the University requires the University to admit students on merit, irrespective of religion, origin, sex, sexual orientation or race.
General Minimum Entrance requirements
The University has general minimum entrance requirements specified by level of programme as set out below. In all cases comparable qualifications may be presented for admission.
Degree and Diploma
Completed class XII (this by definition includes five class XII subjects, one of which must be English). Additionally if Dzongkha is not included amongst the five subjects; it or another language must have been passed at class X level.
Postgraduate Diploma programmes
A good pass at Honours degree level or a good pass at Degree level supplemented with work experience.
Postgraduate Certificate
A degree certificate unless the programme is part of a Masters programme in which case it should have the same entrance requirements as the Masters programme.
Applicants who have qualifications, formal or informal, other than those set out above may be considered for admission, and will be evaluated on the basis of whether they are as well prepared to undertake the programme as are the more ‘standard’ candidates. The following factors can be taken into account in considering the application:
- Maturity
- Other qualifications
- An assessment set by the University
- Presenting a portfolio of evidence of experiential learning
Individual students may be admitted to a later stage of a programme where they have demonstrably reached the same general standard of educational development as achieved through earlier level(s) of the programme.
Selection and Admission of Students
- Selection
- The University is responsible for selecting students for admission to its programmes.
- For school leavers applying to degree programmes (whether or not they lead to an award of the University), the University centrally coordinates the selection process.
- Matriculation
- Students will be formally matriculated and admitted to a degree or to a programme leading to an award of the University by the institute with the formal responsibility for offering that programme. This will normally take place when the student takes up his or her studies. This action is carried out by the college on behalf of the University and with the authority of the University.
- To matriculate, students must produce:
- evidence of identity, such as Citizenship Identity Card
- originals of the certificates, on the basis of whose performance admission is sought; unless he or she is entering on the basis of recent school results in which case the University will have access to the school results directly from source
- vidence of financial support, if not admitted under the Government funding scheme
- if in receipt of Government funding; such evidence as is required by RGoB
- Applicants for full time programmes who are being funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan must fulfil the requirements set out by the RGoB and additionally provide evidence of being a Bhutanese citizen, eg Citizenship Identity Card
Attendance
A student must attend those elements of the programme where students’ absence will be detrimental to the performance of his or her fellow students; e.g. in interactive group sessions such as tutorials, seminars, practicals and works which are subject to group assessment. Attendance at other elements of the programme is the responsibility of individual students, but is subject to the guidance of individual institutes.
