Research Centers

In order to develop appropriate infrastructure, enhance research capacity and support, and help maintain a sustainable financial base for research, various Centers dedicated to thematic research supporting linkages with specific industries have been established. It is expected that the centers will enhance the research reputation of the University and its academics. Research centers exist within the other structures and policies. Each Center is headed by a Coordinator from within the relevant faculty at a College and reports to the Dean of Research and Industrial Linkages (DRIL). The DRIL is responsible for oversight of the Center and ensures its proper functioning within the overall College research environment and strategic plans. 

All research programmes and initiatives at iGNHaS will be carried under the leadership and guidance of the Programme Director (who is also the Director of Research and External Relations, RUB).

IGNHS Secretariat

IGNHS Secretariat will be based at the Office of the Vice Chancellor in Thimphu. IGNHS’s secretarial staff will include the Programme Director, Research Manager, and a Research Communications Officer. The Research Programme Manager shall facilitate the effective implementation of all iGNHaS research programmes and initiatives under the leadership and direction of the Director of Research and External Relations at OVC. The Research Communications Officer will shall facilitate effective coordination of projects activities.

iGNHaS shall have an Advisory Committee who will guide and provide advisory support to the institute in order that it shall pursue it goals and meets its objectives. Owing to the multidisciplinary nature of IGNHS research and its potential to influence development policy and practice, the Advisory Committee shall have members from diverse sections of Bhutanese society such as academia, industry, civil society organizations, and government. The Advisory Committee shall have 9 members with a Chairperson. The Chairperson shall be someone with credible research experience in academia and has knowledge of government policy and good research networks.

Functions of the Advisory Committee

The Advisory Committee shall:

  • Advise and guide iGNHaS to meet its objectives.
  • Support IGNHS programmes and initiatives and provide directions on critical decisions.
  • Ensure quality assurance of all IGNHS research activities including empirical studies, research events and publications.
  • Provide impetus for it growth and sustainability through innovative ideas and critical networks.
  • Review the Annual Report of iGNHaS and provide advice on future directions and sustainability.

Membership

  • Chair:Appointed by the Research and Innovation Committee

Members:

  • Three members appointed from the colleges by the Research and Innovation Committee.
  • These members shall be senior faculty with research experience and knowledge of policy.
  • Four external members appointed by the Research and Innovation Committee, one each from government, industry, civil society organization, and NGO.

  • Research Manager, who shall be the Member Secretary

The Institute for GNH Studies through its many these initiatives will help to build a systematic body of knowledge on the ten major research themes it considers priorities areas: Happiness Economics: Policy and Practice, GNH and Human Values, Gender, Democracy and Governance, Educational Change, Health and Wellness, Climate and Energy, Culture and Sustainable Communities, Youth and Development, and Social Change. For example, researchers, trainers, policy advocates, elected representatives and others will have access to a specialized library with physical as well as electronic resources on gender, governance, democracy and happiness.

iGNHaS will therefore develop and maintain a compact and a comprehensive library with the core objective of becoming a leading professional research and reference centre in the country. The library will provide a one-stop point for search for information for scholars, researchers, academia, students, and all those seeking authentic information through its extensive bank of information. Accordingly, the library will feature a comprehensive collection of publications under each thematic area. Ultimately, the aim is to have all the research and scholarly publications on Bhutan under each theme to be made available at the library.

iGNHaS’ research projects will be undertaken by its core team of researchers comprising of top RUB researchers who are distinguished for their combination of research productivity and policy experience, young Bhutanese researchers (especially highly motivated university graduates), researchers in reputed research institutions within Bhutan or outside who have relevant knowledge and perspectives on specific projects assigned to them, and doctoral candidates enrolled in an RUB college or in external universities. While there are no permanent research positions in the iGNHaS Secretariat, Visiting Research Scholars, depending on the nature of the studies undertaken, iGNHaS researchers from RUB Colleges, those from external research institutions, and young Bhutanese researchers may spend varying lengths of time at the IGNHS secretariat to work on specific projects. Depending on the nature of the research grants secured, RUB researchers will either lead a project or be an active member of a research team. Motivated university graduates will be recruited as Research Assistants for short term assignments to work on specific projects and to work under the supervision of a Lead Researcher.
