Sherubtse College Committed to Creating a Research-rich Environment
15 December 2011: Sherubtse College has begun to take the research vision of the Royal University of Bhutan forward by successfully implementing a system of internal research grant made available to its faculty on a competitive basis.
Earlier this year RUB put in place a research grant policy which requires all of its constituent colleges to set aside at least 1% of its annual operating budget for research and innovation in the respective colleges. Sherubtse Colleges has successfully implemented the policy.
Through what it calls the ‘Sherubtse College Research Grant’, the college has instituted three categories of annual research grant -- Director’s Research Grant which allocates a maximum fund of 25% of the total research grant for the year, Dean’s Research Grant which also allocates a maximum of 25% of the total grant money, and School Research Grant which allocates 50% of the total annual research grant. Mr. Sonam Chogyal, Coordinator of research activities at Sherubtse College said that for the first ever college annual research grant provided to the faculty this year, a total of twenty-four grant applications were received. Of these fifteen successful applications were awarded the grants.
Making headway in creating a positive research environment among its faculty
and students, Sherubtse College has already drafted policy guidelines for accessing the internal research grant. The policies include categorization of the grant, grant amount, project period, research priorities, revenue sharing, grant application procedures, evaluation and selection of proposals, and a code of ethics for the proposal reviewers. Sherubtse College has already set up two research centres -- Centre for Population and Development Studies and Centre for Climate Change and Spatial Information.
As spelt out in the Royal Charter of the Royal University of Bhutan (2003), one of the objectives of the university is to “promote and conduct research, to contribute to the creation of knowledge in an international context and to promote the transfer of knowledge of relevance to Bhutan”.
