The event was graced by Dasho (Dr) Pema Thinley, Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Bhutan, as the Guest of Honour.
A total of 237 students from RUB’s ten constituent colleges -- Sherubtse College, Samtse College of Education, the Institute of Language and Culture Studies, National Institute of Traditional Medicine, Gaeddu College of Business Studies, Jigme Namgyal Polytechnic, College of Science and Technology, Royal Institute of Health Sciences, College of Natural Resources, and Paro College of Education, and the Royal Thimphu College -- took part in various events at the meet. The winners and participants were awarded medals, trophies and certificates.
The 2011 sports meet focused on four main events -- volleyball, table tennis, tae-kwon-do, and badminton. The main objectives of the event, according to the coordinator, Mr. Lungten Wangdi, were to contribute towards building a stronger and healthier nation and to develop and promote university sports as an exemplar of the country’s sporting culture. Good fielders are right thinkers as well, said Mr. Lungten Wangdi.
The Royal University Sports Federation of Bhutan was formed with the aim to promote sporting values and develop sporting practices. RUSFoB is RUB’s governing body responsible for the formulation of policies, plans and activities related to games and sports in the university. The day to day operation of the federation is managed from its Secretariat based at the Paro College of Education.
Mr. Lungten Wangdi said that RUSFoB’s key mandates are to promote and encourage research in games, sports, health and physical education and sport development, preserve and promote the national and traditional games in the university; develop skills and leadership qualities and the values of fair play and non-violent in sports. It also aims to prepare RUB sports teams to take part in national, regional and international level games and sporting events. Equally importantly, the federation aims to promote peace, tolerance, understanding and friendship between and amongst different cultures and nations.
The Royal University Sports Federation of Bhutan is affiliated to the International Federation for University Sports (FISU).
