Introduction

The University Staff and Students statistics volume IV has been published in October 2006. Statistics are compiled twice a year, one in the month of April and other in the month of October. The October release will be more detailed and published as a booklet.

Since the launching of the University in 2003, this publication is the 4th release of the statistics that shows the current number of students and staff in the member colleges / institutes of the University.

As per the Royal University of Bhutan draft Strategic Plan 2005 – 2006 May 2006, the University intends to increase the intake capacity in the member colleges / institutes to cater to the growing number of the class XII students passing out of the Higher Secondary Schools. The projected figure for the students’ capacity by the member colleges / institutes by 2012 is 8100. There will be an increase of 4118 as compared to the total capacity of 3982 as of 2006.

The University plans to develop its existing academic staff and to appoint new well qualified staff such that, ninety percent of its academic staff will possesses bachelors degree by 2010, seventy percent of its Bhutanese staff will have at least Masters degree by 2010; by 2012 this should have increased to seventy five percent. Overall the proportion of those with a subject based Masters Degree will have increased. There should be a ten percent of the Bhutanese staff possessing PhD by 2010 and twelve percent by 2012. There will be greater than ten percent but not more than twenty percent of its academic staff who will continue to be expatriates by 2012.
