Sherubtse College

Sherubtse College, located in Kanglung in the district of Trashigang in east Bhutan, is one of the oldest and largest colleges in the Royal University of Bhutan. The college was established as a Public School in 1968 and became a Junior College in 1976. It became a constituent college of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003. Spread over a sprawling lush green campus with an authentic rural flavour, Sherubtse College is only 10 minutes drive from the Yongphula airport.

Sherubtse College is a multidisciplinary institution and offers a wide range of undergraduate programmes in the arts, humanities, social science, physical and biological sciences. It has ten subject departments — Computer Science and Mathematics, English, Geography and Planning, Botany, Dzongkha, Environmental Studies, Economics, History, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Political Science. The college will soon introduce Master’s programmes English studies, Economics and Mathematics. The programmes are taught by qualified and committed local and international faculty.

Sherubtse College has an active research culture. It continually promotes research and innovation through the college annual college research fund administered in three categories — College Research Grant, School Research Grant, and Director’s Research Grant. To support research and generation of knowledge in areas of population studies and climate change, the college has two research centres — Centre for Population and Development Studies and Centre for Climate Change and Spatial Information. The college publishes an academic journal called Sherub Doenme.

College of Language and Culture Studies

The College of Language and Culture Studies (CLCS), located on the beautiful hilltop of Taktse in Trongsa (central Bhutan), is one of the constituent colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan. It is about six hours drive from the capital, Thimphu. The college was set up as a Rigney institute 1961 in Thimphu.

CLCS offers a number of diploma and undergraduate programmes: BA in Language and Culture, BA in Language and Literature, and Diploma in Language and Communication. From July 2012 the institute will be offer an undergraduate programme in Bhutanese and Himalayan Studies. CLCS aims to be a centre of excellence in higher learning and research in Bhutanese language, culture (dance, music, painting, architecture, weaving and designing, astrology, and etiquette), Buddhist studies, Himalayan studies and GNH studies.

All of CLCS’s programmes are underpinned by an overarching emphasis on human values. Its endeavour therefore is to instill values and groom good human beings through a deep grounding in and practical experience of study areas such as culture, philosophy, language and history. The institute’s motto is ‘To produce modern citizens with traditional knowledge’. CLCS also produces research-based audiovisual documentaries on rituals and performing arts of Bhutan. It has two research centres — Centre for History and Cultural Studies and Centre for Buddhist Studies. CLCS will soon introduce MA and PhD programmes.

Gedu College of Business Studies

Gedu College of Business Studies (GCBS) was established in 2008 as constituent college. Spread over a sprawling campus, the college is strategically located in close proximity with the capital city Thimphu and the industrial and commercial town of Phuntsholing.

GCBS teaches undergraduate programmes in business administration and commerce. The programmes train students to acquire skills and competencies required for careers in business administration and entrepreneurship.

The college has an excellent team of both local and international faculty with academic and industrial backgrounds. College of Natural Resources

The College of Natural Resources (CNR), located in Lobesa about 2 hours drive from the capital city Thimphu, is one of the constituent colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan. It was established in 1992 with the aim to promote economic development and nature conservation in the country.

CNR offers broad-based programmes in natural resources management at the diploma and undergraduate levels. At present the programmes taught in the college include Diploma in Animal Husbandry, Diploma in Agriculture, Diploma in Forestry, B.Sc Agriculture, B.Sc Forestry, and B.Sc Animal Science. The college will introduce an undergraduate program in sustainable development by July 2012 and a Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) program by 2013.

College of Science and Technology

The College of Science and Technology (CST) is the first institute in the country to offer undergraduate degree programmes in engineering under the Royal University of Bhutan.  The college aspires to be a centre of excellence in the field of science and technology-enriched with GNH values by offering quality programmes that are relevant to the need of the job market both within and outside the country.

College of Science and Technology (CST), is responsible to oversee the tertiary education system in the Kingdom of Bhutan in the field of science and technology. The College presently offers Bachelor degree programmes in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Information Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, and Engineering Geology. Jigme Namgyel Engineering College

The Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC), formerly known as the Royal Bhutan Polytechnic(RBP), is one of the constituent colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan. It was established in 1972 coinciding with the third five year economic development of the country. It is situated at 800m above the mean sea level and is located at the west end of Dewathang town. The institute is 18 kilometers away from Samdrup Jongkhar town in Eastern Bhutan, second gateway to Bhutan from Assam in India. Although it started with the Infrastructure development since 1972, it started offering Diploma level programmes in engineering from 22nd Feb 1974.

At the initial stage of its development it offered diploma level program in civil and electrical engineering. The course in Mechanical Engineering was introduced in 1988. In the early ’70s, it also offered certificate level courses in Surveying and Draughting. However, the courses in Surveying and Draughting were discontinued from the late ’80s.

The Jigme Namgyel Engineering College aims to become as the Center of Excellence in providing diploma and Degree level programmes in Applied Engineering and technology, covering wide spectrum of programmes such as the Pre-service, In-service, continuing education programmes, Material testing and certification, research in applied engineering, consultancy and community services through various modes of deliveries including distance.

Till the early 2000, the then Royal Bhutan Polytechnic have been the only Institute of it kind responsible for training and supplying professionally competent, ethically sound, and progressive middle level technical man power and IT professionals relevant to the Bhutanese employing Agencies and Industries. In the year 2000, the institute was temporally relocated to the then Royal Technical Campus in Rinchending Phuntsholing. While at Rinchending the Institute Introduced an under graduate level degree program in Civil and Electrical Engineering in 2001. Currently this Institute is known as College of Science and Technology.

Samtse College of Education

Samtse College of Education (SCE) is another constituent college of the Royal University of Bhutan. Like the college of education in Paro, it specializes in teacher education. Located in a pristine environment congenial for study and contemplation, the college is about 10 minutes drive from the small town of Samtse in south west Bhutan.

SCE was founded as a teacher-training institute in 1968. Previously known as the National Institute of Education, it became a member college of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003. The college offers a wide range of programmes at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels for pre-service and in-service teacher candidates. At present four different progarmmes are available: Postgraduate Diploma in Education; Postgraduate Diploma in Guidance and Counseling; Bachelor of Primary Education; and Bachelor of Secondary Education. The college will introduce Master’s level programmes in science and humanities. Apart from the award bearing programmes that it teaches, SCE also provides a number of short trainings, workshops, seminars and other professional develop courses to teachers and other professionals in the field of education. Paro College of Education

Paro College of Education (PCE), located in the beautiful valley of Paro in western Bhutan, about 2,250 metres above sea level, is one of the constituent colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan. The college is a mere 10 minutes drive from the Paro International Airport and about an hour’s drive from the capital city Thimphu.

PCE was established as a Pre-school Care Training Centre in November 1975. Today the college offers a wide range of programmes at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels for pre-service and in-service teacher candidates. At present six different progarmmes are available: Master of Education in Educational Leadership & Management; Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Dzongkha); Bachelor of Primary Education; Bachelor of Secondary Education; Bachelor of Education (Dzongkha); and Diploma in School Leadership & Management. The college will run a PhD programme in GNH education in 2014.

The college has a research centre — Centre for Educational Research and Development (CERD) established in 2001 with the aim to support, encourage and foster a culture of research and scholarship that lead to improvement in the development of education programmes and practices in the country. CERD publishes a journal called Rabsel and many occasional papers.

Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology

The Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology, officially inaugurated on 6thOctober, 2017 is one of the integral colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan. The decision to establish Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology was made during the meeting held on February 2, 2017 at the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Office. In line with the decision, the chairman of Tertiary Education Board issued an executive order no. Ref No. MoE/EO/2017/4513 dated 20 February 2017 to establish the College. The institute is 24 kilometers away from Mongar town stretching an area of 62 acres of land engulfed by lush green mountains. The university is one of the three new colleges established in Eastern Bhutan with the VISION to be the ‘Center of Excellence in information Technology steeped in GNH values’. The college at its initial stage offers undergraduate programme in Bachelors of computer applications. The programme is taught by qualified and dedicated local and expatriate faculties.The methodology of “Learning by Doing” is a unique one adopted by GCIT. It aims at giving hands- on experience which helps the students understand the practical implementation aspects and the concepts associated with it.Furthermore, the collegeaims to diversify the programmes by including more practical and job-oriented coursein the long-run.

Yonphula Centenary College

Yonphula Centenary College is a new constituent college of the Royal University of Bhutan. It was established through a Royal Government of Bhutan (RGOB) executive order issued in February 2017 and officially inaugurated on 8th October, 2017. The College is located just below the Yonphula Domestic Airport and 9 Kilometers away from Sherubtse College.

The College was established with the Vision to be ‘A GNH-inspired institute of advanced studies for postgraduate programmes in Arts and Sciences.’ And it’s Mission to;

  • Provide quality, GNH-inspired higher education in Arts and Sciences.
  • Center of Excellence for knowledge creation, research and innovation.
  • Work continuously to innovate and exemplify the values and principles of holistic nation.

Currently, the college is offering the Master of Arts in English. The college plans to introduce a number of masters’ programmes in Arts and Sciences in the future.
