Introduction

The University Staff and Students statistics volume V has been published in May 2007. Statistics are compiled twice a year, one in the month of May-June and other in the month of October-November.

Since the launching of the University in 2003, this publication is the 5th release of the statistics that shows the current number of students and staff in the member colleges / institutes of the University.

As per the Royal University of Bhutan Strategic Plan 2005 - May 2007, the University intends to increase the intake capacity in the member colleges / institutes to cater to the growing number of the class XII students passing out of the Higher Secondary Schools. The projected figure for the students’ capacity in the member colleges / institutes by 2012 is 8847. There will be an increase of 4798 as compared to the total capacity of 4049 as of May 2007.

The University plans to develop its existing academic staff and to appoint new well qualified staff such that, ninety percent of its academic staff will possess bachelors degree by 2010, seventy percent of its Bhutanese staff will have at least Masters degree by 2010; by 2012 this should have increased to seventy five percent. Overall the proportion of those with a subject based Masters Degree will have increased. There should be a ten percent of the Bhutanese staff possessing PhD by 2010 and twelve percent by 2012. There will be greater than ten percent but not more than twenty percent of its academic staff who will continue to be expatriates by 2012.

The next Staff and Students statistics publication volume VI will be in October 2007.

Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, Dewathang
The Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic (JNP) was established in 1972 as Royal Bhutan Polytechnic (RBP). It is 18km. away from Samdrup Jongkhar in Eastern Bhutan. Although it started with the Infrastructure development since 1972, it started offering Diploma level programmes in engineering from 22nd February 1974. At the initial stage it offered programmes in Civil and Electrical Engineering. The course in Mechanical Engineering was introduced from 1988.
The institute was relocated to Rinchhending campus in the year 2000 due to security reasons. Since the security situation has improved in the east and owing to the University’s expansion plan of the institute with limited scope for expansion in Rinchhending campus, the Diploma level programme has been restored in its original campus at Dewathang from August 2006.
JNP aims to become itself as the “centre of Excellence in Engineering and Technology”, which is responsible for preparing professionally competent, ethically sound, and progressive middle level engineers and IT professionals, relevant to the Bhutanese context and quality that matches any international standards.
