6th Winter University Games 2018

A healthy body equals to a healthy mind. To foster a healthy lifestyle among young adolescents, the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) has been organizing the Winter University Games since 2014.The objectives of the tournament are to keep the students engaged during their vacation whilst improving their sports skills both at University and National level.

It also serves as a platform for the students to prepare for the World Universal Games.

The 6th University Games 2019 was hosted in the Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology (GCIT) in collaboration with the Bhutan University Sports Federation (BUSF). BUSF is an association under RUB that helps organize the Summer and Winter University Games. The event has brought together 9 colleges of RUB for various sports competition such as basketball, football and volleyball.

The night before the opening ceremony, the organizing committee met with the Colleges’ coach and team leader for technical coordination meeting where they were welcomed by Lhato Jamba, President of GCIT and Chief Advisor of the games. During the meeting, they were introduced to the vision and mission of the tournaments and also briefed on their roles and responsibilities.

Hon’ble Dasho Yonten Phuntsho, Zimpon Wogma to the Office of the HRH Gyaltshab graced the opening ceremony of the tournament by lighting the BUSF Flame. The first football match (men) was held between Gyalpozhing College of Information and Technology (GCIT) and Paro College of Education (PCE). The match was won by PCE. Followed by was 2nd Football match (men) between the College of Science and Technology (CLCS) and Sherubtse College (SC). The match ended in a draw.

The prize award ceremony for the Volleyball (Men and Women) and Basketball (Men and Women) was held on 16th December. The prize award ceremony and the final football match (both men and women) were held on December 17th, the 112th National Day where President of Paro College Education, Dr. Dorji Thinley and President of the College of Language and Culture Studies, Lopen Lungten Gyatsho were the Chief Guests.

Such event did have a positive toll on the youth of the colleges. Miss Sonam Zangmo, one of the players from the College of Language and Culture Studies (CLCS) pursuing BA in Bhutan Himalayan Studies expressed that not only it engages youth in a meaningful way during their vacations but also help expand their career opportunities.   

Sherubtse College’s football team captain, Mr. Bijay Gurug pursuing BSc Chemistry said that the Winter University Games have served as a platform to work on their social skills and make new friends from other Colleges. He stated that most importantly, sports have helped build a disciplined and healthy lifestyle among his peers.

These youth are also encouraged by their Colleges to participate in various National open tournaments that help them build their confidence and improve their skills.

The next University Games will be held at the Jigme Namgyel Engineering College. The winners and runners-up of the various games are as follows:
